This is a fairly standard post apocalypse novel, written by a mainstream author. The book showed some promise in its premises but was let down in the execution of it.

The strongest part is the beginning of the book, when interspaced with the main story, we are told how the world ended. We never get to know exactly what happened, as it is told in the form of a diary by one of the last survivors in Chicago. The real story is set some centuries hence and is much less interesting, in fact a bog standard post apocalyptic tale.

This often happens with me: I find stories about how the world is ending much more interesting then stories set after it. Stories which do both and show a handful of survivors pulling togethr to rebuilt the world are the worst in this regard.
