A Song of Stone
Iain Banks
280 pages
published in 1998.

In an unnamed, European seeming country wrecked by civil war, two refugees are forced by a paramilitary group to back to the castle they left behind and house the band there. The narrator, an unamed noblreman and owner of the Castle reminisces about his past and describes the horrible things happening during the course of the soldier's occupation of his castle.

One of Iain Bank's lesser novels, in which dreadful and terrible things happen to people without it having any emotional impact on the reader. The narrator is himself emotionally stunted and there are hints of something hideous in his past and that of his lover, who may be related to him...
