Stephen Jay Gould is a biologist who has a monthly column "this view of life" in Natural History, of which this is the fifth collection. Most of the essays in this collection deal with the topic of evolution in some form or another.

Stephen Jay Gould writes in a very clear informed style, neither needlessly obfuscating nor talking down or patronising. I quite liked this book, especially the essays which delved into the history of evolution.
