Everything that’s wrong with America
Is exemplified in those statistics (courtesy of Ampersand):
Out of 435 House members and 100 Senators there will be:
- 22 Hispanics in the House, the most we’ve ever had.
- zero Hispanics in the Senate.
- 37 blacks in the House, two fewer than there were in 1993-1995.
- zero blacks in the Senate.
- 60 women in the House.
- “an unprecedented 14 women” in the Senate.
As Ampersand said:
Think back on these statistics whenever you hear someone argue that sex and race don’t matter much in the US nowadays.
To compare with the Netherlands, my homecountry, of the 150 members of the Tweede Kamer, the most powerful house of parliament, 48 are women and 12 are non-indigenous, as far as I could tell from a quick look here.
