A blog called Harry’s Place says that a “certain section of the left” (which, apparently, is the same certain section of the left that’s been doing this or the past century or so, surprisingly enough) is in danger of collapsing under nihilism, or America-hating, or something. I’m tempted to take the Glenn Reynolds approach and declare that it’s just too complicated, but that would really give far too much credence to this argument. What I find most telling about this little essay is that it essentially discounts the politics of mobilization and counter mobilizaiton. He faults a certain section of the left for becoming see-no-evil Palestinian supporters (which comes down to the section of the left that’s a few obscure organizations and a Dutch website), yet offers precisely no commentary on the section of the right that’s become see-no-evil Israel supporters. He does quite carefully restrict himself to the actual far left, rather than the imprecise and often slanderous amalgam that includes virtually everyone from Zell Miller to ANSWER.
