I Need A Day on A Warm Beach
Little from me today, off for some blood tests, what larks. Still it’s comforting to know that I’m not alone in this all- encompassing sense of existential dread.
” [Emanuel Todd on the US] ‘The real mystery to me is situated there: how can a society renounce common sense and pragmatism to such an extent and enter into such a process of ideological self-destruction?’‘That will be the gaping mystery for future historians to solve, if there are any.’ “
James Wolcott on Jonah, Gore Vidal, the Emperor Tiberius, Hurricane Katrina and the accelerating collapse of a hollow empire.
As usual with Wolcott, all is encapsulated in that final flourish, “If there are any”. That about sums up the general sense of anomie for me.
Quick, emergency kitten!
A kitten in rabbit ears, awww. Way better than prozac, vodka or cognitive behavioural therapy, if you ask me. There’s nothing quite like the public humiliation out of a small house mammal to cheer a girl up.
