Newton’s third Law

Prinseneiland, painting by Frans Koppelaar.

Posting has been light this weekend, due the presence of various US bloggers, much Thai food, a number of drinks, and several bikes. Saturday’s panel went pretty well, considering the lack of prep time, see post here from Martin.

Yesterday was a typically Dutch, crisp, cold and bright February Sunday and your loyal correspondent, with Bicycle Mark, Lindsay Majikthise Bayerstein , Amanda Pandagon Marcotte, and The Eponymous Ezra Klein , went on a bike ride around Amsterdam’s grachten, part of the Jordaan and much of the artistic colony at Prinseneiland, stopping at an open-house art gallery and later for coffee, beer, that stalwart Dutch beverage, warme chocolade melk met slagroom, and discussion of how to cultivate botulism and theoretically poison your partner should they ever come up with anything like this .

I had a really enjoyable afternoon and got to see part of Amsterdam I’d known only vaguely, but now I’m very tired indeed. Concentrated spurts of energy like yesterday are possible occasionally, but there’s always a big price to be paid. So today, I shall be mostly be sitting around reading blogs.

I’ve offered to do a tour of the foodie, fashion and plant-lover’s heaven that is the Albert Cuyp Markt at some point this week – in the meantime, here’s a link to Lindsay’s Flickr album of the trip so far. She has a beautiful eye for composition. One sees these things every day and it mostly passes one by after a while , but she’s managed to catch one of the essential things about Amsterdam, the unexpected art.

Now I’m going to sit here for a minute and watch our resident pair of Blue Tits ( don’t think I didn’t hear that inward snigger, you disgusting person) pecking at the peanuts in the bird feeder, and admire the snowdrops and crocuses I planted that’re just starting to flower. Then it’s me for a cup of tea and a cuddle with the cats.

I like being out, but it’s nice to be home.

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, washed the t-shirt 23 times, threw the t-shirt in the ragbag, now I'm polishing furniture with it.
