Paranoia: so much cheaper than a slasher flick

Wanna be scared good? Become a member of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders and you’ll be scared all the time, by such ominous news as the FBI investigating a truck-driving school in Missouri which had an unusual large number of clients with a “Middle-Eastern sounding name”. As Debbie “mein fuhrer will keep us safe” Schlussel puts it (courtesy of Seeing the Forest):

Fortunately, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (a fancy name for a group that hasn’t done much) raided the school, and the Missouri Highway Patrol has blocked the school from testing new students or issuing further licenses. Well, it’s about time. What took so long?

Must be awful to be sacred that easily.

Certainly the original article offers little to be fearful off. This is the key paragraph in the story:

Eslinger said the trucking program?s director, Dean Proffitt, first contacted state police in 2003 to report his suspicions that a large number of people taking the commercial driver?s license test had names that appeared to be Middle Eastern in origin.

About 520 people who did not train at the school took the test there from May 2004 through December 2005. More than 300 of them, or about 60 percent, had names that could be Middle Eastern in origin.

That’s it. Somebody got suspicious because there were allegedly so many people with alleged Middle Eastern names were taking driver’s licence tests at one particular school. There is no other information in the article that would help you to decide whether or not this is indeed strange, nor is there any indication that something untoward is happening. Yet it’s enough for your average 101 Fighting Keyboarder to stock up on bottled water and twinkies.
