Pakistan. puts Imran Khan under house arrest, blocks protest against Bush visit

Islamabad, March. 4 (AP):

Police detained former cricket star Imran Khan at his Islamabad home and arrested dozens of supporters from his opposition party to block a rally on Saturday against U.S. President George W. Bush’s visit to Pakistan, police and witnesses said.

Among the few who joined the protest march to Islamabad from the nearby city of Rawalpindi, police beat and arrested at least 16 people who were chanting slogans against Bush and Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

Police ordered a handful of other demonstrators to go home or face arrest.

Khan, a former Pakistan cricket captain, was leaving a friend’s home after dinner at around 1 a.m. when he was served with a detention order, then driven to his lakeside home in a police convoy, said the spokesman, Akbar S. Babar.

A senior police official confirmed that Khan had been detained at his home. The official did not want to be named as he wasn’t authorized to comment to media about it.

A spokesman from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf or Movement for Justice party said dozens of its members had been rounded up before the protest.

CNN: Bush takes a swing at cricket

Bush was pitcher and catcher bowled and batted several times.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) — U.S. President George W. Bush, an avid baseball fan, on Saturday tried his hand at a sport hugely popular in parts of the old British empire — cricket — and was pronounced “not bad” for a first-timer.

Bush bowled and batted several times on a practice cricket pitch set up on the grounds of the U.S. embassy in the capital of cricket-mad Pakistan, as students from the Islamabad College for Boys and the private school Schola Nova, who included girls, looked on and encouraged him.

He got a quick lesson on how to hold the bat from Shaharyar Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

‘Holding the bat’? Is that what they’re calling it now?
