Comment of The Day

A modest proposal from a commenter, in response to a Guardian leader on the Virginia Tech murders:

The reason, as I understand it, that Americans have the right to bear arms is to allow the people to challenge the executive should that executive attempt to usurp the constitution or otherwise prove treasonous.

Why then, when George Bush has declared the Consitution as “just a goddamned piece of paper” and is busy avoiding all of its checks and balances, by means of signing statements and other blatantly anti-Constitutional devices, do Americans not exercise this responsibility entrusted to them?

Since rights involve responsibilities, I would suggest that Americans do not deserve the right to bear arms unless they are willing to carry out their duty under the Constitution.

Sounds reasonable to me.
