Out of 435 House members and 100 Senators there will be:

• 22 Hispanics in the House, the most we’ve ever had.
• zero Hispanics in the Senate.
• 37 blacks in the House, two fewer than there were in 1993-1995.
• zero blacks in the Senate.
• 60 women in the House.
• “an unprecedented 14 women” in the Senate.

As Ampersand said:

Think back on these statistics whenever you hear someone argue that sex and race don’t matter much in the US nowadays.

To compare with the Netherlands, my homecountry, of the 150 members of the Tweede Kamer, the most powerful house of parliament, 48 are women and 12 are non-indigenous, as far as I could tell from a quick look here.

The reason we disagree with Heldman is that we do not believe that there is a limited amount of mojo. Mojo is a renewable resource. If you use it and defeat Judge Pickering, your supply will increase in the fight over Judge Owen. People will sign on for the fight when they see that it is possible to win. The exercise of political power makes you stronger not weaker.

If Pickering is defeated, it will demonstrate that there are limits to Mr. Bush?s political power. That will embolden liberals and make it easier to garner support for opposing Owen.

William Burton on the real reason Trent Lott had to resign:

Trent Lott is a racist, but that’s not why the Republicans forced him out. Trent Lott is not a particularly likable guy, but that’s not why the Republicans forced him out. Trent Lott made a habit of manipulating Senate rules more boldly than any majority leader since LBJ, but that’s not why the Republicans forced him out.

The Republicans forced out Trent Lott because they’d never forgiven him for not kicking Bill Clinton out of office when he had the chance.
