Marty Peretz: racist little fuck

See:

But, if Lamont is trying to put himself forward as a new face in the Democratic Party, the two men who planted themselves right in back of him on the stage at the victory party gave it all away. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are hustlers, and racist hustlers at that. They have accomplished nothing for African-Americans, nothing. Jackson keeps himself alive by conning big corporations out of bags of cash. He is a one-man reparations racket. Sharpton is the reverend with the big silver jewelry, and it isn’t a cross. He sups off his perennial political campaigns and has been known not to pay taxes besides.

It’s about as subtle as calling Peretz an out of touch New York intellectual who puts the interests of another country before his own.

The Necessary Evil of Gibbon

For years I’ve put off reading Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, even though there it was, right to hand on my Dad’s bookshelves. I managed Henry Mayhew when I was 11, so why couldn’t I be bothered with Gibbon?

But Roman history and Latin were school subjects and not to be countenanced after the bell went. That was tea, biscuits and Jackanory time.

Lately though I’ve often considered getting it to read, if only to say I have read it, but procrastination has always won. It’s a big book, and I’ve already had to read Hobbes and Swift and Locke and Montesquiou and even some Macaulay and isn’t that enough yet, damn you? What do you want from me, blood? I deserve a rest with a few cosy detective novels or a 1930’s copy of Strand magazine and a bag of fudge, not endless accounts of battles and dry, turgid prose.

But having read this archive piece Billmon points to in the course of expounding on the arrogance and the folly of Bush’s foreign policy, the need to read it has become a little more urgent. The history of Rome in its latter days sheds much light on current events.

Perhaps I should’ve listened to our Latin master at school – “Culley minor ” ( yes, really, Culley major being my elder sister) “Sit up! Stop chatting and pay attention!” – but it can be a little difficult to be attentive with a blackboard eraser hurtling past your ear at 60 miles an hour.

Ah, happy days.

However my lack of erudition is made good thanks to the wonders of modernity. There is now an online edition so I have no excuses, none at all, not to read it anymore. Onwards to enlightenment then. How very helpful of those internet bods, damn them.

It may help if I try and visualise Lurchio as the narrator.

Holy OSes, Batman!

Windows – The Christian OS

In my last post, I pointed out that the Vatican seemed to be having some trouble with Norton’s anti-virus. Stephen responded saying that they could always use another OS which didn’t have as many worries about viruses. However, It appears that the only true OS for a good Christian is Windows:
It is now clear that the one true operating system that every good Christian should use is Microsoft’s Windows operating system. It was sent from God to help protect us from the vile operating systems from Satan, like Apple. How is it so clear? I think the evidence speaks for itself.

Apple – Garden of Eden.

– We are being tempted by this tool of the devil much like Adam and Eve were.

Windows > Mac

– Windows is much more common than Mac.

– It also is divinely inspired. Therefore, it is okay to have a Windows Operating System.

Other things that need to be addressed…

– Linux is not real! It is simply Jewish mythology. (Lilith, for those of you who don’t get it.)

– Other operating systems are the tools of heathens to try to stray good Christians from the path of righteousness. Do not be tempted by their flashy statements of “it’s what all the cool nerds use”. They are simply trying to sway your faith.

– Open source leads to changes that allow Satan into your faith. It is a slippery slope! Avoid it at all costs!

CNN: C’mon kids, let’s go to Army World!

Tuesday, August 8, 2006 Posted: 1352 GMT (2152 HKT)

FORT BELVOIR, Virginia (AP) — The Army is considering a proposal to allow a private developer to build a military-themed park that would include Cobra Gunship rides and bars including a “1st Division Lounge.”

Military officials said a massive entertainment and hotel complex built next to a national Army museum could draw more than 1 million people a year. But authorities in Fairfax County are objecting because of already traffic-clogged roads surrounding the proposed site.

Universal City Property Management III, of Orlando, Florida, submitted the unsolicited proposal for the theme park last year.

“You can command the latest M-1 tank, feel the rush of a paratrooper freefall, fly a Cobra Gunship or defend your B-17 as a waist gunner,” according to the proposal, which was obtained by The Washington Post.

County officials have no authority over the Army’s decision because the site is federal property. County Supervisor T. Dana Kauffman said he thought the entertainment concept died last year and said he had no interest in turning a military museum into “Disney on Rolling Road.”

But the Army notified the county last week it is planning to move the military museum from Fort Belvoir to a site a few miles away that would be large enough for the entertainment complex.
