Is It Just Me, Or Are The Mitt Romney Clan Mutants?

The teeth, they’re coming!

Is it just me that finds the multiplicity of identikit Romneys decidedly disconcerting?

It’s not just the Mitt lies and the hypocrisy and the weird religion and the teeth and and the torture advocacy, it’s that and the fact that should he be elected President, he’ll have his own ready-made, full-on Mormon, shiny-toothed and haired Praetorian guard – like Uday and Usay Hussein, but more Osmondesque.

What started me down that scary train of thought was this article from Reuters:

Polygamist community faces rare genetic disorder

COLORADO CITY, Arizona (Reuters) – In a dusty neighborhood under sheer sandstone cliffs studded with juniper on the Arizona-Utah border, a rare genetic disorder is spreading through polygamous families on a wave of inbreeding.

The twin border communities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, have the world’s highest known prevalence of fumarase deficiency, an enzyme irregularity that causes severe mental retardation brought on by cousin marriage, doctors say.

“Arizona has about half the world’s population of known fumarase deficiency patients,” said Dr. Theodore Tarby, a pediatric neurologist who has treated many of the children at Arizona clinics under contracts with the state.

“It exists in a certain percentage of the broader population but once you get a tendency to inbreed you’re inbreeding people who have the gene there, so you markedly increase the risk of developing the condition,” he said.

The community of about 10,000 people, who shun outsiders and are taught to avoid newspapers, television and the Internet, is home to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), a sect that broke from the mainstream Mormon church 72 years ago over polygamy.

The group, who wear conservative 19th-century clothing, is led by Warren Jeffs, who was arrested in August and charged as an accomplice to rape for using his authority to order a 14-year-old girl against her wishes to marry and have sex with her 19-year-old cousin.

Doctors in the area declined requests for interviews and families refuse to talk to reporters. But former FLDS members, independent doctors and authorities say the disorder appears to have struck at least 20 children in the past 15 years.

“The disease itself is very rare in the rest of the world,” said Dr. Vinodh Narayanan of Arizona’s St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center and Barrow Neurological Institute. Doctors worldwide had only studied about 10 cases just a decade ago.

“Once you get people within in the same community marrying, then the chances grow of having two people carrying the exact same mutation.”

British Government Blocks UK Resident’s Return Home From Gitmo – Because He’s Been In Gitmo

Kafka is alive and well and working for the Home Office. From the Independent:

Guantanamo inmate told: You can’t return to UK, you’ve been away too long By Ben Russell, Political Correspondent
Published: 15 June 2007

Gordon Brown is being urged to intervene to stop the Home Office banning a British resident from returning home after more than four years at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.

Campaigners expressed fury after ministers said Jamil el-Banna’s permission to stay in Britain had lapsed during the four-and-a-half years he has been held without charge at the US detention camp. [My emphasis]

Mr Banna’s son, Anas, 10, will deliver a letter to Gordon Brown today, asking the prime minister-in-waiting to let his father return home for Father’s Day on Sunday. Anas asked Mr Brown:

“I hope you won’t say that my dad was away from the country for more than two years as they say. My dad was only out of the country because he was locked up over there. They stopped him from coming back to us. Now my Dad can leave and we hope he comes back to us. I hope he comes back to us before 17 June, before Father’s Day. Every year this day is very sad for us. I hope that this year, this day will be the best day of my life.”

Mr Banna was arrested in The Gambia in 2002 with another former Guantanamo detainee, Bisher al-Rawi, who has been freed. The two men had travelled to west Africa to set up a peanut processing plant but were arrested and taken to Afghanistan and Guantanamo after an MI5 tip-off.

Finally, An Outbreak Of Clue

Connecticut ‘Porn Popup” trial teacher Julie Amero has won a retrial, with the help of geekdom:

A US judge yesterday ordered a retrial of a schoolteacher found guilty of computer porn charges after a sustained campaign by internet specialists proclaiming her innocence.

Julie Amero, 40, was convicted in January of being responsible for a series of sex advertisements that popped up on a classroom computer and were seen by pupils, in a case that has caught nationwide attention and raised important questions about content control on computers.

The prosecution at the trial in Connecticut had claimed she must have clicked on the websites for the adverts to begin appearing. But after the trial, 28 computer science academics in the state sought to prove that the rapid-fire sequence of pop-up sex advertisements could have appeared automatically.

It’s The Secret Annexes, Dummies

TPM Muckraker has garnered opinions from various lawyers and civil liberties types (and a fat lot of good they’ve done us so far) who say that the Presidential directive I blogged about. the one that givies supreme power to Bush follwing any catastrophic incident at home or abroad (as defined by guess who, Bush.) is nothing to worry about. Nothing to see here, move along, you’re all a bunch of paranoids, calm down.

And I’m Marie of Rumania.

What’s important are the secret annexes to the order, the ones that are classified, the ones no-one’s allowed to see. These secret annexes:

23) Annex A and the classified Continuity Annexes, attached hereto, are hereby incorporated into and made a part of this directive.

But of course they’re not hereto attached.

Who knows what they actually say, but in the light of Bushco’s ongoing power grab I have a pretty good guess. Halliburton didn’t get that open-ended domestic detention centre contract for nuthin’.

Typical bloody soft centrists though, to assign benign motives to a president whose every action in office has been the very opposite of benign.

Did it not even occur to these experts to ask themselves, if they are still of the opinion that the order changes nothing: why now? Why issue it at all?

It’s all in the secret annexes, dummies. And we won’t see those until the Deciderer decides to decide he’s the Dictator (cue the manufactured attack by Iran) or Cheney executes his domestic coup, whichever comes soonest.

[Added to later because I thought it was skimpy]
