Concern troll is concerned

Aaronovitch Watch draws my attention to the latest Decent crusade against Amnesty International for having the audacity to actually, you know, work with an ex-Guantanamo Bay prisoner in getting this prison and torture site closed as well as persuading European countries to take in ex-prisoners. According to The Times AI is “damaged” by their partnership with Moazzam Begg, providing as evidence the innuendo and assertions of “A SENIOR official at Amnesty International”, one Gita Sahgal:

Gita Sahgal, head of the gender unit at Amnesty’s international secretariat, believes that collaborating with Moazzam Begg, a former British inmate at Guantanamo Bay, “fundamentally damages” the organisation’s reputation.

In an email sent to Amnesty’s top bosses, she suggests the charity has mistakenly allied itself with Begg and his “jihadi” group, Cageprisoners, out of fear of being branded racist and Islamophobic.

Sahgal describes Begg as “Britain’s most famous supporter of the Taliban”. He has championed the rights of jailed Al-Qaeda members and hate preachers, including Anwar al-Awlaki, the alleged spiritual mentor of the Christmas Day Detroit plane bomber.

It’s all the usual guilt by association and scary buzzword — Taliban, Al-Qaeda, jihadi, served up in that undercooled semi-objective writing style the Times is so good at; all done nicely and proper with both sides of the story presented, but you still know what to think just from the headline. That said, it’s still a lot more sane than Martin Bright’s rant about it, as noted on Aaronovitch Watch:

Bright’s prose is somewhat over-caffeinated: “… blowing the lid… rightly sick of the lazy alliance… blown the whistle [hmm, lots of ‘blowing’ going on here – Ed] … Begg is now an integral part … she has been deeply frustrated by the way the British liberal intelligentsia gives house-room to right-wing Islamists … Jamaat-i-Islami, the south Asian blood-brothers of the Muslim Brotherhood… It is Gita Sahgal who should be the darling of the human rights establishment, not Moazzam Begg.” What, I wonder, is giving “house-room”? Until today, when, according to Bright, Ms Sahgal was suspended she was a ‘senior official at Amnesty’ (Sunday Times). So which of them, if either, was a ‘darling’ of the “liberal intelligensia”?

All the usual stuff from those who want Amnesty International to be the cheerleader for US-led human rights imperialism, who want AI to denounce the enemy-du-jour and then shut up, who want AI to mention Iranian torture, not Israeli torture. It infuriates somebody like Martin “not too” Bright, that AI does not distinguish between torture done in the name of Allah or torture done in the name of anti-terrorism. With his Us vs Them mentality, his worldview of a civilised west in conflict with barbaric Islam he’s the spiritual descendant of the Cold Warriors who in the seventies and eighties accused AI of being communist dupes, as he now accuses them of being jihadist dupes. What has changes is the reification of human rights — back then Cold Warriors could still argue that the fight against communism justified the occasional human rights violation, even if they tried to bagatalise them, but today Bright and others like him have to pretend they are the real human rights defenders.

Accusations like these are nothing new therefore. hey tend to pop up whenever AI or HRW or any other human rights organisation focuses attention on the wrong sort of human rights violations, those perpetrated by the US or its allies (especially Israel). First these crimes are denied, then once that becomes impossible they’re minimalised, then AI is accused of paying undue attention to them and not enough to other crimes (usually said by people too stupid to even scan their website which always proves the opposite) and finally it is accused of being a (willing/unwilling) tool of the enemy. Lather, rinse, repeat; concern trolling on an international scale. It’s a transparent ploy that has never worked in the past, but as long as you sling enough shit something will stick in the end. And that’s the real crime, if fake scandals like this persuade people not to support AI anymore.

Sarah Bloody Palin

It may be hard to do if you’re a liberal blogger, frustrated with what your administration has managed to achieve so far and the general unwillingness of Obama to actually act liberal, but spare a thought for your poor, befuddled rightwing counterpart. Imagine you’re one of the original warbloggers. You were just another middle manager or low ranking IT consultant, ignorant of politics until 9/11 changed everything and you started to spew your hate and fear online sometime in 2002 or 2003. Sometime later you got lucky on a few stories and got linked to by Instapundit (or maybe you are instapundit) and you got your own following, even some handy extra income from the blogads you put up. For a few years it was all good, making some pocket money from annoying liberals and sure, you sometimes had your doubts about Bush but they were quickly suppressed by his continuing succes and your share in it.

But then it all went wrong. The wars you supported turned sour and the country turned on the Republicans some time later, but while you could see the writing on the wall, your commenters and peers stayed optimistic, convinced everything would work out in the end. Even when the economy turned south and the best your party could nominate for the presidential elections was McCain they stayed optimistic and you went with them. But then Sarah Palin became the vicepresidential candidate and it all seemed too much. Bush may have been a bit dim, but here was somebody who wasn’t just dumb, but without any of the advantages Bush brought to the table, hailed as the second coming. What was wrong with your party? Couldn’t they see how bad she was? You almost feelt glad that McCain lost the election.

Now fast forward a year and here this Palin woman — whom you thought would never ever show her face again — is launchign her “autobiography”, featured on Oprah and talking serioously about whether or not she would be a candidate in 2012. It’s enough to make you eat a shotgun…

Laugh at the wingnuts, but do not be too smug

Max Blumenthal takes a tour of the Teabaggers protests. Lots of douchebags and idiots. But see also:

So while it is true that your average Joe Teabagger suffers from hilarious white-trash racial myopia, and that is something that we can all laugh about, for there is nothing more hilarious and mockable on this good green earth than the incoherent whiteguy rage that has for so long propagated within our unacknowledged middling orders, the notion that these people are uniquely blinkered and hypocritical in their protest is perfectly false.

a buttery-faced man with a smugly malicious manner

Nick Cohen watched an episode of Mock the Week. Bad idea:

BBC 2 describes the show as satire, but it is not satirical in the usual sense of the word. The chairman, Dara Ó Briain, a buttery-faced man with a smugly malicious manner, presides over panellists without a political idea in their little heads. The viewer can never say, for instance, that Frankie Boyle, the show’s star, hates the thought of a Conservative government and is determined to find the barb that will pierce David Cameron’s defences, or that any of his team-mates are determined to punish Gordon Brown for what he has done to Britain. They do not want to scratch, let alone wound, those with real power over our lives, which is probably why the BBC gives them free rein.

Dara Ó Briain, a buttery-faced man with a smugly malicious manner, allegedly

The best way to picture Mock the Week is to imagine six men, with a low-grade but undoubted comic talent, late at night in a pub. Drink has dissolved their inhibitions and each is determined to push the others aside and prove he is top dog. The blatancy of their competitiveness sets them apart from other TV comics. Status anxiety torments performers in all panel games. But you never see Ian Hislop look resentful when Paul Merton comes up with a good joke on Have I Got News for You, or rush out his gags so he can be sure that he can get them on air. No veneer of conviviality hides the contestants’ jealousy on Mock the Week. They don’t laugh at each other’s jokes. They visibly struggle for money and fame as they interrupt each other and race to snatch the microphone in the middle of the studio. As tense and mirthless as saloon-bar fighters in the moment before the first punch is thrown, they will do anything to establish their superiority.

Continues in the same vein, with all the examples drawn from the same short sequence of the same episode, ad infinitum.

That’s what happens when you let a man with no sense of humour and who’s well on his way to having sold out all his youthful leftwing ideals but who still has his Dave Spart reflexes honed to a keen edge criticise comedy shows. He gets it painfully, obviously wrong and will never be aware of how wrong he is, even when you show him why he’s wrong. His amateur hour psycho-analysis, his misreading of motives and emoties, his inability to understand anything but the broadest gag, all speak of a deeply confused mind. It’s fitting that all this is published in Standpoint, which has never show any understanding of culture other than as a vehicle of propaganda.

You wonder why this piece was published there though; was it perhaps intended for Private Eye (see telltale buttering up to Ian Hislop) but rejected?
