https://cloggie.org/wissewords2/wp-content/uploads/Walkure%20Romanze.mp4

Yes, Walkure Romanze is a series about girls doing jousting. Based on an erotic visual novel, it’s very much “the only boy in magic school” harem series, as the protagonist is Mizuno Takahiro, who wants to become a squire (or begeleiter as the show’s jargon has it). He has a Tragic Past and a childhood friend mIO who believes in him; she’s the one winning the duel in the clip above. This being a harem show there are of course other girls, like Bertile, the girl who ends up being lifted out of her saddle above. She’s the haughty ojo-sama type. There’s also Cecilia, the student council president, the tomboyish Noel, the obligatory lesbianesque Akane with the hots for Cecila, etc. etc.

!["A]("/pictures/wissewords/Walkure)

This is not a good series, let’s be clear. Everything you’d dread to see when hearing “based on an eroge visual novel” is sadly present. In episode two our protagonist gets into lucky pervert situations multiple times, gets slapped for it equally as often and a lot of background girls get their skirts flipped or entirely taken off by Mio running amok trying to handle a jousting pole. Worse is the dumb innuendo. Oh Mio is going to handle a jousting pole for the first time? Let’s dim the lights, cue the sexy saxophone and let her describe it as it’s a penis. What japery!

What struck me though watching episode two (and don’t ask me why I did) is the relative care and attention that went into its production. A bog standard harem show this might be, mostly forgotten once it finished airing, but the animators and other staff seemingly did their best to make it look as good as they were able to. The character designs are decent, the jousting scenes are handled well in a blend of traditional and CG animation and it all feels a little bit better than it needed to be. If i compare it to the endless drudgery of narou inspired fantasy anime of the best five years it’s a masterpiece.

Let’s go back to the relative golden age that was 2013 and look at how good a terrible anime could look: Yes, Walkure Romanze is a series about girls doing jousting.
