{"id":47,"date":"2009-02-12T16:08:35","date_gmt":"2009-02-12T21:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cloggie.org\/wissewords2\/?p=47"},"modified":"2009-03-09T16:11:09","modified_gmt":"2009-03-09T21:11:09","slug":"wilders-refused-entry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cloggie.org\/wissewords2\/2009\/02\/12\/wilders-refused-entry\/","title":{"rendered":"Wilders refused entry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nSo Wilders tried getting into the UK anyway and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk_politics\/7885918.stm\">got turned away at Heathrow<\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"cite\">\n<p>\nA Dutch MP who called the Koran a &#8220;fascist book&#8221; has been sent back to the Netherlands after attempting to defy a ban on entering the UK.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFreedom Party MP Geert Wilders had been invited to show his controversial film &#8211; which links the Islamic holy book to terrorism &#8211; in the UK&#8217;s<br \/>\nHouse of Lords.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBut Mr Wilders, who faces trial in his own country for inciting hatred, has been denied entry by the Home Office.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHe told the BBC it was a &#8220;very sad day&#8221; for UK democracy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Dutch ambassador was also at Heathrow to make clear his government&#8217;s opposition to the ban on Mr Wilders entering the UK.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSchadenfreude or not, the way in which the UK government handled <cite>l&#8217;affaire Wilders<\/cite> was really cackhanded. By banning him from the country they&#8217;ve overinflated his importance, gave him another chance to play martyr for free speech and got him a shitload of free media attention, more than he could&#8217;ve gotten showing his nasty little film in the House of Lords.
