Rooney, like Backham before him, is way overrated as a footballer. Good at Man U, dissapointing in the national team, overhyped by the English press, a ood footballer but because he’s English he has to be the best player in the world.

I did have this to say on Friday:
“I thought the lack of questioning of Capello and Lampard on whether Wayne Rooney would be affected by his dad’s arrest was some of the most craven press conference behaviour I’d seen for some time,” so was feeling rather smug the next day.
If they were good enough to be sure of getting out of the group, the whole question would be moot. I do think he has a skill that has been unmatched in England players for a long time.
Maybe they can save themselves by drafting in the spine of the Arsene team.
