UK Christian ‘right-to-lifers’ are hoping to seize their moment to force their views on the public, as South Dakota‘s insane attempt to leverage the Supreme Court into making Margaret Atwood a documentarist and every woman a criminal puts abortion on the political agenda.
What? You think we don’t have religious nutjobs too? We certainly do. After all the Evangelist Movement did begin in England and now it’s been twisted and sent back to reinfect us. There are massive US-style evangelical and charismatic churches all over south-east England and the Midlands, not to mention the homegrown ‘Alpha Course’ Movement and the house churches, and the LDS and the 7th day Adventists….. you get the picture.
The born-again zealots have also quietly infected most levels of the Church of England, up to and including former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey. The current bish, beardie Blairite Rowan Williams, is a political creature trying to hold the line between the incoming fundy tide and the traditionalist Anglicans. The Anglican church worldwide is on the verge of schism, all due to the US-influenced fundies.
The happy-clappies with their fluffy hair, shiny happy smiles and guitars, were the first innocuous and even rather likeable sign of the infestation. They were just so nice. But it didn’t take long for the real nutters of the likes of Dyson to turn up and spread poison. Infectious fundyism is as virulent as Ebola.
The awful thing about this is that unlike America, we have C of E bishops sitting in our upper House. making decisions on legislation. Anglican Christianity is the state religion and if the church is taken over by fundie nutjobs then they’ll have direct input to the political process, bypassing the electoral system. That’s scary and wrong.
The urge to ape their crazier US brethren seems to have led some of them to some particularly nasty, not to mention illegal, behaviour. But if respectable New Labour imports Republican political tactics, why shouldn’t the lesser pond scum? Short version: when you know you’re in the wrong, use intimidation to get your way.
Like this – so called ‘Christians’ using classic white supremacist indimidation tactics like posting of nurse’s home address and picture on their website ( no URL, I’m not giving them the oxygen of publicity. That’s what Google is for).

That’s a company I’d like to know more about. I may even pony up the cash for the list of members and directors. And their names and addresses.
Unfortunately to find out whether what Dyson gives as his home address is actually his home adress and not that of the company costs cash and requires organisational registration, but if anyone with a Land Registry account is reading, it’s public information and my email is up top.
