More on Middelburg

Jay pointed me to this video in comments to my post on the Middelburg bombardment. A documentary made for one of the Dutch public broadcasting digital channels, it shows footage from Middelburg just before and after the attack. In Dutch, obviously.

What struck me about this video was how the man remembered so clearly what had happened. And I can remember as a 17 year old visiting my relatives in Zeeland and making a tour of Middelburg with my uncle and cousins. Clearly the war memories were still alive to my relatives, especially to my grandfather because his house had also been bombed. We walked through the area of the Abdij and into the Markt. “All destroyed and rebuilt,” I was told. I was amazed at the transformation just over twenty years. The war in Vietnam was escalating – cities and villages destroyed – and people were dying. It was an awakening for me to connect the human costs of war. When I returned to the US and started university, I became an active anti-war protester.
