More is not Always Better — Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi

I would enjoy Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi more if I wasn’t continuously distracted by the unfeasable breasts of its protagonist:

A short girl with boobs that are barely physically possible

The series’ original mangaka, Nonco, clearly comes from the “more breast is better breast” school of character design. It’s not just Kanan here being blessed with tits bigger than her head. There’s also her childhood maid first seen in the second episode, whose abundance is even greater, as well as the childhood friend of Kanan’s love interest, the female teacher of her love interest’s class, the bunny girls her father employs… It’s all a bit much, as seemingly every woman in this series sports a rack that would give its owner serious back problems in real life. I’m not a fan. Kanan’s design is cute except for those ridiculous tits. They look alright in a still image, but in motion they quickly become an irritation.

A dull looking high school boy blushing slightly, with spiky hair

Youji’s problem is that he’s just dull, his character design matching his personality. The gimmick of the series is that Kanan is trying to eat his soul, but got tricked into becoming his girlfriend after he misunderstood what she wanted from him. When she told him how she wanted to peel off his skin he thought she was talking about a blowjob. He enthusiastically agrees to it, which first puzzles Kanan and then flusters her immensely when she realises he’s talking about S-E-X. A solid setup but let down by Youji just not being enough of a pervert. It’s the sort of story that can only work with teenagerrs, despite Cy Catwell’s objections:

[…]I just don’t get why this couldn’t have been two adults and not two high schoolers. In fact, I think the “sexy” nature of the Kanan’s approach versus Youji’s incredibly disarming eagerness to have sex (he wants to go to third base immediately) would have been genuinely enjoyable if say, Kanan, a thousand year old devil with a bust size to rival Ilulu’s from Maid Dragon, were like… in her thirties and Youji the same. Or like, at least if they were in college.[…]

You cannot tell the kind of story Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi wants to tell with adults. Youij has to be the kind of horny, hormonal dumbass that only teenagers can be, unfiltered by adult experience to play off Kanan’s innocence and naivety, which again wouldn’t work if she was a thirty something office lady. That’s she’s “actually” a thousand year old devil doesn’t matter: functionally she’s a sheltered teenage girl. I do understand Cy feeling uncomfortable about the high school setting and the way Kanan and other female characters are used in fanservice, even though it’s rather mild (mostly breasts going ‘boing’ rather than e.g. the camera leering at her underpants).

I can also understand why Draggle wished it was “just a bit more trashy”, which brings me back to Youji. In the first three episodes he has been mostly passive, not been all that thirsty after that initial setup and it has been Kanan who has been providing the comedy. I maybe should’ve expected this from a bloke orientated romcom, but it does make it all slightly more tedious than it needed to be. The introduction of the omnivorous maid in episode two, who unlike her mistress has no problems seducing anyone and anything, was a good step forward. Just a pity she was even more boobylicious than Kanan…

Bloody Mary

Remember this? Well, now there is a sixteen minute pilot featuring the same characters as they go ghost hunting:

Best of all, it’s available in your choice of dub: English or Japanese. The plot is simple. Paranormal Youtube streamer Betty, now living together with Seeka, the demon she half assed summoning in that earlier video, gets an invitation to a ghost hunt in an abandoned mansion at the edge of town. Said mansion is supposedly hunted by a ghost that will pop out of the mirror if you say her name three times in front of it: Bloody Mary, Bloody ?Mary, Bloody Mary. When she appears things do not go according to plan…

Very much running on Loony Tunes logic here, this is more funny than scary. I love the CG animation here, that doesn’t bother to hide it’s CG animation. If you like this, Studio Wrong has a lot of shorts starring the same cast up on its Youtube channel.

Intoxicated Yuri — First Impressions

Kamiina Botan has rizz when she’s tipsy.

A pink haired anime girl blushes gently and smiles as she says that when she said she was interested earlier, she was interested in you

Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana is about what happens when the titular Kamiina Botan (twenty) gets her first drink in her. Not only does she take to it as a duck to water, she’s a flirty drunk. A first year student doing an engineering degree, she;s on a sight seeing trip with a few girls from her residental hall, but when they stop for lunch Ibuki, their RA has disappeared on them. Botan goes in search for her and it turns out Ibuki slipped away to get herself a drink: a truly humongeous whiskey highball.

A small, young looking but actually old enough to drink, grey haired girl in a moss coloured hoodie lifting a glass to her face that is almost big enough for her to drown in

Even watered down that’s an absurd amount of booze for just 500 yen. I tend to estimate amounts by assuming one euro equals a hundred yen, making this excellent value for money when the average boring pilsner here is not that much cheaper, but of course these days 500 yen is more like three euro, which makes it even better. Later in the episode we learn that Ibuki has a display cabinet filled with booze in their hall’s common room, which makes a little bit more sense if all alcohol is this inexpensive in Japan… Anyway, it turns out Ibuki is a bit shy about her drinking as it makes her hiccup and she has had bad experiences when others saw that. When she finds out Botan doesn’t mind, she thinks drinking with others might not be so bad…

A flustered looking purple haired girl. Botan tells her that 'You are adorable, Gujo-senpai!'

Which may be good news for Gujo-senpai here, the other person Botan drinks and flirts with in this episode, as she has been looking for a way to drink with Ibuki. When Botan confronts her with this, she turns from confident, cool senpai, in a blushing, awkward mess. Yes, Kamiina Botan has rizz when she’s tipsy.

I had no idea what to expect from this series but the word “yuri” in the title had me hopeful and fortunately I got what I wanted. This is a slice of moe series about college girls drinking with and being flirted at by Kamiina Botan and I’m all for it. The animation is gorgeous and matches the laid back feeling of the show, as Kvin explains over at Bluesky. The only real quibble I have is that the subtitles transposes the characters’ names from Japanese order (surname, given name) to western order.

this actually gave me a bit of nostalgia for my own college days, hanging out with friends and room mates in our student flat. and not only do we see people drinking, Gujo-senpai smokes too! Refreshing to have such a properly adult series for once among all the endless series set in high school.

Hon nara Uru hodo — Friday Funnies

Every serious reader or collector will have wondered at some point about what will happen with their books after they die. Hon nara Uru hodo‘s first chapter is about the worst case scenario.

A secondhand bookseller is standing in front of a bookcase filled with books and plastic models, wishing he could've met the owner of it before he had died. The next panel has him thinking that tomorrow this collection will be gone.

Hon nara Uru hodo is about a secondhand bookseller. In the first chapter, after his store has been introduced, he’s called by a local estate agent to the house of a recently deceased man, who turns out to have been a serious reader and collector. As the chapter title has it, the protagonist is there to deliver “the last rites of books”.

In 2023 I moved back to my hometown from Amsterdam, where I’d lived for the best part of thirty years. Partially this was to be closer to my family, the majority of which still lived there. A large part of it was also the ability to move into a bigger house. My small one bedroom flat was being choked with books, comics and other nerdy stuff. In my new house I could actually use one of the bedrooms as a library, have the attic to store all my floppies and other stuff and still have a room left over to use as an office (which houses most of my non-fiction books). Which meant I could actually have a living room without book cases in it. (Still got some gardening and cooking books living on shelves in the kitchen though). But yeah, this does means that once I die, whoever inherits it all will see themselves confronted with something like this:

A real estate agent is showing a secondhand bookstore owner around a house of a recently deceased man, showing the second floor library filled with books, the first floor library filled with books and an incredibly cluttered living room, also filled with books.

Hon nara Uru hodo then starts slightly melancholy, but also with a little bit of a cynical undertone to it. If you’re a big reader or collector, you probably will have dreamt of having your own bookstore at one point, because what’s a better occupation for a book lover? The reality of course is that a lot of secondhand books are unsellable, unreadable thrash, either because of what they are or the condition they’re in. You need to be hardheaded as a bookseller or you won’t survive. Despite this cynical undertone, the love for books and bookselling shines through. I love this sort of manga, where the mangaka is clearly writing about their own passions and interests and the joy of the subject shines through.

Twentyfive Years of Marriage Equality

picture from the World's first gay marriage

One of the few times I could be genuinely proud of my country, even if it happened much later than it should’ve. The last time I mentioned this, at the tenth year anniversary, the US was still defending marriage and would take another four year to do the right thing. At this twentyfifth anniversary any pride is tempered by the fear that America, as well as other Western countries are backsliding. The elite manufactured trans panic has predicatably led to an all out attack on queer rights and British Terfs have moved to attack abortion too. And we’re seeing the same sort of astroturfing occur here too.

Nevertheless marriage equality has been almost totally accepted here. I do have to admit though to still having that little disconnect happening in my brain sometimes when I hear a man talking about his husband or a woman about her wife. You don’t get rid of ingrained heteronormativity that easily…

Twenty years ago.
